PRESIDENT - Suzanne Redmond, National Rehabiliation Hospital

Suzanne Redmond is a Senior Speech-Language Pathologist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital and NRH Regional Rehab at Ballston. She has been involved with DCSHA since 2000, and previously served as President in 2002-2003.

Role:
The DCSHA presidency is a three-year commitment. The first year is spent as the president-elect, followed by a year as the acting president, and finally a year as the past-president.
  • designates the monthly meeting place and meeting times with input from the executive board members
  • creates the agenda and presides over all meetings – requires some basic knowledge of parliamentary procedures
  • notifies ASHA of new executive board members
  • appoints, with the approval of the executive board, all chairs of the committees
  • submits four President’s letters
  • attends the Fall CSAP (Council of State Association Presidents) meeting held prior to the ASHA Convention. Earn free CEUs, network, and learn about the newest issues from ASHA. One night hotel and registration fees are paid for by DCSHA.
  • maintains communications with area presidents (Maryland and Virginia)
  • receives RSVPs for the Fall Dinner, Spring Discussion Group, and June Reception
  • attends program meetings usually held in October, November, December, January, February, and March
  • presides over annual general membership meeting (usually held at Winter Conference)
  • announces recipients of awards (Handelsman-Hendrix, Bonnie Bunting, and State Clinical Achievement Award)
  • sends out invitations for president’s appreciation dinner

PRESIDENT ELECT – OPEN

Role:
  • attends the Spring CSAP (Council of State Association Presidents) meeting. Earn free CEUs, network, and learn about the newest issues from ASHA. Airfare, hotel, and registration fees are paid for by DCSHA.
  • assumes the duties of the President in the event of the latter’s absence or incapacity
  • assists Program Chair



PAST PRESIDENT - Open



Role:
  • coordinates the preparation of nominations for all officers and submits to the executive board
  • solicits nominations for the following awards: the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement, the Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award, and the Distinguished Service Award
  • prepares an application which may involve contacting prior colleagues to obtain work history and pertinent achievements
  • assists the president as needed



SECRETARY - Open



Role:

  • records minutes of monthly executive board meetings and program committee meetings
  • creates action agendas for meetings
  • distributes minutes and action agendas by email before next meeting to all board members
  • distributes hard copies of minutes and action agendas to members at the executive board meeting to review for approval
  • revises minutes if necessary and emails to the Newsletter Editor
  • maintains secretary archives (minutes and agendas)
  • updates executive board roster



TREASURER - Jennifer DeMarinis, National Rehabilitation Hospital

Jennifer DeMarinis is an inpatient staff speech language pathologist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC. This is Jennifer’s first year as a member of DCSHA.

Role:

  • sets annual budget for fiscal year January 1 - December 31
  • pays all invoices received by mail (CSAP dues, ASHA expenses, etc.)
  • reimburses executive board members for approved expenses (receipt must be provided)
  • deposits all income and maintains running balance of account
  • reconciles all transactions with bank statements
  • provides financial reports to executive board
  • prepares and presents proposed budget for next fiscal year to executive board for approval


MEMBERSHIP- Kristen Torbert, National Rehabilitation Hospital

Kristen Torbert is currently a certified speech-language pathologist at the National Rehabilitation Hospital. This is her third year involved with DCSHA.

Role:

  • The primary role of the Membership Chairperson is to recruit members and manage the membership information.
  • completes the membership drive via mass mailing of renewal forms to current DCSHA members, as well as soliciting new members from area universities, schools systems, hospitals and other facilities
  • conducts a follow-up phone drive for current members who did not submit renewal forms/dues
  • manages Microsoft Access database which includes entering new members’ information and updating existing members’ information
  • edits and distributes the DCSHA directory every other year
  • prints labels for memberships drives, newsletters and other organizations wishing to purchase DCSHA labels
  • collects DCSHA interest surveys at the Winter Conference and contacts persons interested in joining a DCSHA committee


CONTINUING EDUCATION - Stephanie Marshall, Gallaudet University.

Stephanie Marshall, M.S., CCC-A. Coordinator of Support Services at the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University overseeing speech, audiology, occupation therapy and physical therapy services.

Role:
DCSHA Continuing Educator Administrator Responsibilities:

  • Keeps abreast of current Policies and Procedures established by the ASHA Continuing Education Board (CEB) for all Approved CE Providers.
  • Serve as the liaison and sole contact person between DCSHA and the ASHA CE office for information and inquiries regarding CE issues in accordance with the “One Contact Policy” set by the ASHA CEB.
  • Reviews and assures that DCSHA CE Activities and promotional materials comply with the policies and procedures of the ASHA CEB.
  • Prepares and submits registration documents to ASHA for all DCSHA CE Activities offering ASHA Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in compliance with the policies and procedures set by the ASHA CEB.
  • Obtains prior approval from the DCSHA Executive Board for registering a Continuing Education Activity for individuals or organizations seeking a Cooperative Agreement with DCSHA to provide ASHA CEUs for the activity.
  • Prepares and submits ASHA CE Activity reports following all DCSHA CE Activities in compliance with the policies and procedures set by the ASHA CEB.
  • Maintains DCSHA Cont. Education Activity registration and report records for a minimum of 3 years.
  • Ensures that the DCSHA Executive Board receives ASHA Continuing Education invoices for annual and five year review fees.


PROGRAM CHAIR– Silvia Martinez, Howard University

Silvia Martinez, Ed., D., CCC-S is assistant professor at Howard University. Dr. Martinez has served as bilingual speech-language pathologist in public schools, consultant, lecturer and professor at various universities, and administrator of programs. She has held the position of Director of Multicultural Practices and Education at ASHA. Her areas of interest pertain to health literac y, bilingualism, Spanish and assessment. She is currently the Multicultural Consultant to the NISSLHA Executive Board.

Role:
The Program Chairperson is responsible for the Committee on Programs which plans the program for the Winter Conference and any other continuing education efforts.
  • selects program co-chairs (adult, pediatric, or audiology)
  • presides over all program committee meetings
  • maintain the program timeline (vendors, silent auction, labels, brochures) which is kept in the program binder
  • organizes a wrap up meeting to review course evaluations



COMMUNICATIONS - Sharon Khoo, Providence Hospital

Sharon works as a Speech-Language Pathologist at Civista Medical Center and Providence Hospital. She has been actively involved with DCSHA for a number of years, recently serving as program chair and president in 2001-2002.

Role:

  • prepares the new executive board roster with updated bios
  • assigns new email addresses to committee emails
  • updates job postings page, LC page, Awards Page.
  • makes certain payments are made for web hosting, domain name, and
  • website maintenance
  • solicits advertisements, makes certain payments are made prior to posting ads, and sends an invoice if necessary
  • responds to emails sent to support@dcsha.org - maintains communication with webmaster via email or phone if any problems arise
  • responds to any other requests made by the board/members.



NEWSLETTER - Sharon Khoo, Providence Hospital

Role:

  • 1 month prior to newletter deadline, emails facility contacts for any updates
  • writes/collects articles/photos of interest for the newsletter
  • collects the president’s letter, LC updates and minutes of meetings
  • By deadline, submits all material to be published to desktop publisher
  • Prints and mails out newsletter (with the help of an administrative assistant)
  • When able, posts newsletter online
